COSTA MESA –The fights might have been amateur — but – the fighters weren’t lacking in spirit.
More than 2,800 spectators turned out for the SummerFist IV mixed marital arts show, held Thursday at the Orange County Fair, promoter Roy Englebrecht said.
And the MMA fighters didn’t disappoint, as all but one of the six bouts went the distance.
In the co-main event, 185-pounder James Gomez, who fights out of the Huntington Beach Ultimate Training Center, improved to 3-0 with a decision over Palmdale’s Joshua Miller.
Cameron McCarty, also fighting out of the Huntington Beach gym, improved to 1-1 with a decision over Squire Redfern in a 145-pound bout.
In a 155-pound match that featured a pair of fighters from Anaheim, Kyle Mason won a unanimous decision over Anthony Monaco.
Dale Maleness of San Diego stopped Long Beach’s Daniel Bermudez with a guillotine choke in the first round of a 170-pound fight.
In a 135-pound bout, Ventura’s Saul Ayton won by unanimous decision over Michael Sanchez of Victorville.
Englebrecht also promotes the bi-monthly Fight Club OC shows in the Hangar at the fairgrounds.
